ADF recognizes volunteer October

Maria Bengochea is always willing to help ADF-Winnemucca and Alzheimer’s Awareness  whether by participating in events like the Sprint Triathlon and Longest Day Golf Scramble or helping at our weekly Respite. She serves as co-facilitator of the Winnemucca Alzheimer’s Support Group and assists at our numerous ADF presentations. A fantastic individual, Maria goes beyond.

 • Can you please share a little bit about why you became a member of Dementia Friendly Nevada?

I was beginning to notice memory issues as well as some slight difficulty with cognition.  I retired and decided it would be to my benefit to learn as much about dementia as I could and service my community at the same time.

• What is one thing you wish others knew about becoming a new member of Dementia Friendly Nevada?

The wealth of information that can be learned about Dementia to benefit yourself, your family and the community in general; such as, the different types of dementia, how to diagnose dementia, and depending on the diagnosis, how to best cope with the information as well as how to plan all aspects of your life going forward. There are also support groups one can benefit from.

• What is one of your hopes for how your community can become more respectful, educated, supportive and inclusive of people living with dementia?

Affordable memory-care housing

• What is one myth or misconception about dementia that you’d like to dispel or clarify?

That one should not be afraid to talk about dementia openly whether you yourself are experiencing symptoms you feel may be related to dementia, or you notice it in a family member. Don’t brush it off hoping it will go away.  Be open about your concerns versus denying it exists.

•What are three of your favorite things to do in your leisure time?

Swim, golf, hike, bake
