University of Nevada, Reno recognized with national rankings

RENO — The University of Nevada, Reno was recently ranked amongst the country’s best colleges and universities by several nationally respected publications including U.S. News & World Report, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Monthly.

“The rankings speak to the quality of our university in terms of our student experience and outcomes, faculty achievements and our ability to impactfully engage with the many diverse communities that we serve,” University President Brian Sandoval said.

The U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Colleges Rankings list the University 195th among “National Universities,” up from No. 263 last year. The University is also ranked No. 106 among “Top Public Schools.” Schools that are classified in the “National Universities” category offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs. U.S. News writes that these schools “are committed to producing groundbreaking research.”

The New York Times College-Access Index Rankings list the University as No. 48 among the 286 colleges ranked. The College-Access Index is a list of the county’s most-selective universities ranked in order of economic diversity, or the share of students receiving Pell Grants, which typically go to students from the bottom half of the income distribution. There are only three land-grant institutions ranked higher than the University of Nevada, Reno by The Times.

In the Wall Street Journal/College Plus Rankings America’s Best Colleges 2024 listings, the University is ranked No. 209 out of 400 institutions ranked. The WSJ rankings are based on student outcomes, such as graduation rates and social mobility, the student experience/learning environment taken from student survey responses and diversity on campus.

The Washington Monthly 2023 National University Rankings list the University as No. 204 out of 442 institutions of higher learning. The Washington Monthly rankings are for four-year institutions based on their contribution to the public good in three categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service.

“Taken together, all of these rankings are indicative of the upward trajectory of our university as we work to meet the needs of Nevada and its people,” Sandoval said. “Our land-grant mission has always emphasized quality, accessibility and diversity and it is clear that our students, faculty and staff are delivering on all of these aspects on a daily basis. The work of our entire University has never mattered more than it does right now. We are achieving on the highest of national levels and are furthering the University’s impactful work in such a way that lives are transformed and that future dreams can be realized.”
