The Mustangs get ready to sack the Dayton QB.

Within the past couple of weeks, Pershing County has blanked Yerington (50-0), North Tahoe (49-0) and now Dayton (36-0.) Lovelock hosted Dayton last Friday on Future Mustang night.

After the JV game, Lovelock's student-athletes and fans ran onto the field and did the Mustang spell-out. They all wore their jerseys or Mustang gear. The JV win (34-26) added to the joyful atmosphere. The mood spilled over into the varsity game.

"We were happy with our play against Dayton. They have had some nice wins this season," coach Mike Brooks said.

The 2023 Dust Devils have won battles against Yerington, Incline, Battle Mountain and White Pine. But the Mustangs were on a roll. It was their night.

"We came ready to play from the first snap and that continued the entire game," Brooks said. "The offensive line paved the way to success."

Travis Donaldson, Izayuh McGlothin, Tyrn Sam, Luis Sanchez and Michael Reitz each scored rushing touchdowns. Aaron Kienbaum and Trenton Rhodes displayed some incredible catches.

The defense held the Dust Devils at bay.

"We had a few nice pass break-ups and Luis Sanchez grabbed an interception," Brooks said.

The Mustangs improved to (3-3, overall, and 2-1 in the 2A Northern), putting them in good shape as the schedule progresses to postseason.

"We just have to keep improving and win the games in front of us. There are still games to be played that will decide the order of finish for the league," Brooks said.

This Friday the team crosses time zones to play West Wendover (1-3). The following weekend (Friday Oct. 20) they host Battle Mountain on senior night.

The senior players are Eddie Herrera, Aaron Kienbaum, Conner Fecht, Brian Kauvaka and Bryce Gottschalk.

Saturday, Oct. 28, they play CASR in Reno. Then it's onto the postseason and hopefully a berth in the playoffs or more.

Last year the team hosted its first playoff game since 2018 and beat Battle Mountain (50-19).

They headed to Vegas to compete at the state level but lost to the Meadows (48-13).

"We were happy to host Future Mustang night," Brooks concluded. "It's awesome to see the excitement of both the little kids and high school kids."
