Last Thursday the Pershing County High School volleyball team  traveled to Carson City to play Sierra Lutheran Falcons, a team new to the 2A.

The Mustangs beat them in three sets 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 and improved to 9-8, overall, and 8-4 in the 2A Northern.

"Sierra Lutheran has improved so much and has the best sportsmanship. I look forward to competing with them in the future," coach Monica Halverson said. "This was an upbeat and fun game for the JV and varsity teams - good music, good moods and the start of a great weekend."

""My girls tend to play down to the level of competition. In the third set I thought they were displaying common behaviors and we would have to go to a fourth set, but thankfully they got their game together and finished as victors," she added.

Pershing County sophomore Kyra Cerini played an outstanding game according to the coach.

"Kyra was the standout with her perfectly timed kills from the middle position. She has been working hard on getting those overpasses with a solid block or hit and on Thursday it just connected for her. She had five solid, well-placed kills for the Mustangs."

Raegan Burrows had another huge game with four ace serves, 14 kills and 22 digs.

Yasmine McKinney had an ace, two kills and seven digs. Taylor Garland played both the OH and M positions, delivering five aces, three kills and eight digs.

Anna Happy had two aces, one kill and 19 assists. Arya Garland had 11 digs. Mia Canchola stepped in with an ace and two digs.

Pershing County sophomore Kenya Vaughan is recovering from a kickball injury and will unfortunately be out the rest of the season.

The coach hopes she'll be back next year, stronger than ever.

The Mustangs traveled to Yerington on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Results were not available at press time.

The Lions are one of the Mustangs’ toughest opponents.

They'll face another toughie on Oct. 14 when they travel to North Tahoe to play the Lakers at 11 a.m. and noon.

"We will fight hard to take the wins and better our position for the playoffs," Halverson said.

On Friday, Oct. 20, Pershing County hosts rival school Battle Mountain at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Don't miss the Dig Pink fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 21.

A bake sale will offer cakes, cookies and caramel apples, always a crowd favorite.

A silent auction and raffle prizes will add excitement to the festivities as Lovelock hosts West Wendover.

A portion of the money the team raises always goes to a worthy cause or member of the community.

"We want everyone to wear bright pink and pack the stands," Halverson said. JV plays at 11 p.m. and varsity follows at noon.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, is the last home game of the year and senior night. The girls play Incline at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Lovelock's senior volleyball players are Yasmine McKinney, Taylor Garland, Anna Happy and KayLee Poffenroth.

The girls play their last regular game of the season on the road against CASR on Thursday, Oct. 26.

Lovelock hosts the 2A regional playoffs on Nov. 3 and 4.
