In order for the Lowry High School boys soccer team to get back in the playoff hunt in the second half of the Northern 3A East, the Buckaroos were going to need a couple breaks to go their way.

The Buckaroos had the tough task of hosting the top two teams in the Northern 3A East on Friday and Saturday.

The weekend got off to a tough start, with a 4-0 loss to Spring Creek, as the Spartans scored two goals apiece in each half to complete the season sweep.

For the first 55 minutes or so on Saturday afternoon, it appeared Lowry was going to be dealt another loss to league-leading Elko.

The Indians entered the match 8-0 in the Northern 3A East and had not allowed a goal to a league opponent.

Elko grabbed a 2-0 lead at halftime, with a goal in the 19th minute and a penalty kick two minutes later. Lowry had its best chance of the first half to cut the lead in half, when Nazerath Razo just missed on a header off a corner kick. The Elko goalie was there to stop the shot.

About 10 minutes into the second half, the Indians tacked on a third goal from about 25 yards out after a defensive breakdown by the Buckaroo defense.

However, the next 10 minutes of the contest would help Lowry in the playoff chase. In the chaotic few minutes, Razo would score three times to tie the match.

The first came in the 58th minute and the second followed six minutes later.

The Buckaroos ties the match at 3-3 when Razo scored as the Elko goalie came out to make a play but got caught out of the net, leaving the goal wide open.

Lowry continued to put pressure on the Elko defense with a couple for scoring chances but the Indians withstood the rally to get the tie.

The Buckaroos improved to 3-5-1 in league play and 3-7-2 overall and will need help to get one of the four playoff spots.

Elko leads the league at 8-0-1, followed by Spring Creek (8-1-0) in second. West Wendover (5-3-1), Churchill County (4-4-1) and Fernley (4-5-0) round out the top five.

Lowry hosts White Pine on Friday at 3:45 p.m. and West Wendover on Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
