Battle Mountain routs Yerington to keep lead in Northern 2A

The Battle Mountain High School football team celebrated homecoming in style with an impressive 43-8 win over Yerington on Friday night at Tim Knight Field.

The Longhorns ran their win streak to four games and lead the Northern 2A at 4-0 and are 4-2 overall.

The Yerington offense went nowhere for much of the first half, as Battle Mountain was on the board five minutes into the contest after a 61-yard drive.

James Spealman capped off the drive with a 1-yard run and the junior added the 2-point conversion as well to give the Longhorns an 8-0 lead.

After the two squads traded punts, Battle Mountain increased the advantage to 15-0 four minutes into the second quarter on a 44-yard pass from Jake Perrone to Liam Bundrock. Aril Kyllonen added the extra point.

The Lions took little time off the clock on their next possession, which resulted in a punt and the Longhorns had a quick answer for another score.

Battle Mountain drove 66 yards in just over two minutes, capped off by a 27-yard run by Spealman. Kyllonen added the extra point for a 22-0 lead with 4:14 left in the first half.

The Lions went nowhere on their next drive and after a poor punt, the Longhorns were back in business at the 20-yard line. 

Two plays later, Perrone connected with Isaac Martinez for a 14-yard touchdown pass and a 29-0 lead at halftime.

Battle Mountain got the ball back to start the second half and quickly made the game a running clock, as Spealman broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run on the third play if the drive to make the score 36-0.

Yerington produced its best drive of the night on the next possession, driving 70 yards and scoring on a 1-yard run to cut the deficit to 36-8 and momentarily putting the game back to a normal clock.

After a pair of punts, Battle Mountain created the running clock for good with a 29-yard run by Spealman with 29 seconds left in the third quarter.

Battle Mountain leads the Northern 2A at 4-0, with Coral Academy second at 4-1. 

Incline and Pershing County are tied for third, with Incline owning the tiebreaker with the head-to-head win over the Mustangs. 

West Wendover and Yerington are tied for fifth at  2-3.

The top four teams advance to the state playoffs, set to begin Nov. 3.

Battle Mountain hosts Coral Academy on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and travel to Lovelock on Friday, Oct. 20, to play Pershing County at 7 p.m.
