Battle Mountain cross country team runs in Winnemucca

The Battle Mountain High School cross country team made the short trip to Winnemucca on Friday afternoon for the Lowry Invitational at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

A beautiful day greeted the runners on the quick 3.1-mile course, run on grass and pavement.

Sophomore Eli Colver led the way for the Battle Mountain boys with a 14th-place finish in a time of 19 minutes, 41 seconds.

Moroni Colver, a freshman, placed 21st with a time of 20:29. Sophomore Sean Doney finished 30th at 21:31 and fellow sophomore Tristan Colver stopped the watch at 23:06.

Elko’s Braylon Baggett (16:11) won the boys race and Spring Creek’s Nathan Thomas (16:29), Ian Mitchel (17:16), Scottie Adams (17:17) and Rhett White (17:52) rounded out the top five.

Spring Creek won the team title and Elko was second.

In the girls 3.1-mile race Danielle Madalena earned a 10th-place finish in a time of 24:11 and Sonja Sherve was 23rd at 29:14.

Elko’s Lilianna Haynes won the race with a time of 20:48 and teammate Reese Hatch (21:10) was second. Spring Creek had runners finish third through ninth to secure the team title.

Avery Clayson (21:11) finished third, followed by Zoie Starkey (21:16) and Brianna Perchetti (22:11).

Battle Mountain closes out the regular season at Wells on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Chimney Rock Golf Course.

The Northeastern Nevada JV Championships will take place Friday, Oct. 20, at Spring Creek Golf Course.

The Northern 1A/2A Regional Championships is set for Friday, Oct. 27, at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The girls run at 10 a.m. and the boys at 12:35 p.m.

The top three teams from the Northern Region meet and the top three teams from the Southern Region meet advance to the six-team Class 2A state championship meet.

The top seven individuals from teams that did not qualify for the state meet in the Northern Region meet and the top seven individuals from teams that did not qualify for the state meet in the Southern Region meet also advance to the Class 2A state meet.

The Class 2A will score a team’s first four (4) finishers and have the fifth, sixth and seventh finishers serve to displace other teams’ scores.
