Second grade students in Mrs. Katie Vezina's class at Battle Mountain Elementary School have been learning about different components of ancient Indian and Chinese civilizations. The five components of a civilization include jobs, cities, writing, religion and leaders.
Students were able to connect their learning with a hands-on art project. The students were each given a mound of terra cotta clay and were tasked to create the base of a pot. Once their base was created, students used a cuneiform alphabet to carve initials into the clay. Cuneiform writing is the wedge-shaped characters that were carved into clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia. After carving their initials into the pots, students were able to design the side of their pots.
