The Pershing County volleyball team won both of their homecoming games last week.
On Wednesday, Sept. 27, they beat Oasis Academy in three sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-10).
On Saturday, the Mustangs defeated Silver Stage in four (25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-15).
In the win over Oasis, the Mustangs’ grand entrance faltered when the poster they tried to break through proved impenetrable. It was more like a steel wall. But their fighting spirit never dimmed.
"The girls were hyped and ready to play. There were lots of fans in the stands and the game went well. Lots of good plays on offense and defense. It showed because we took the match in three sets. Oasis never backed down and played some great volleyball. It makes me so happy when my team comes to play," coach Monica Halverson said.
Aaliyah Allen, Anna Happy and Kyra Cerina defend against Silver Stage at their homecoming game on Saturday.
Yasmine McKinney totaled three aces, two kills and two digs. Raegan Burrows added seven aces, 11 kills and two digs.
Taylor Garland had five kills and 11 digs. Anna Happy had four aces, 18 assists and four digs.
Arya Garland had two aces and eight digs. Kyra Cerini had an ace, two kills and a dig. Mia Canchola had three aces, a kill and an assist.
On Saturday, the Mustangs hosted Silver Stage for their second homecoming game.
The Nighthawks added strength to their lineup with some exchange students.
"Silver Stage played tough. It was back and forth with lots of defensive saves by my players. My team was ready to play and adjusted to the change in lineup at the start of the game," Halverson said. "Defense wins games and eventually wins championships. I hope this is the case for us. Raegan Burrows had a huge game with a killer serve. She also contributed to a ton of digs for us."
Burrows had eight aces, 13 kills, and 33 digs. Yasmine McKinney had four aces, five kills, a solo block and 18 digs.
Taylor Garland had 12 digs. Anna Happy had eight aces, 23 assists and eight digs.
"So much improvement on Anna's serve," said Halverson.
Laura Gomez had two digs. Arya Garland had two aces, a kill and 36 digs. Kaylee Poffenroth had two digs, Kyra Cerini tallied an ace, three kills, an assist and five digs. Mia Canchola had eight digs. Aaliyah Allen had an ace, four kills, and 14 digs.
The Mustangs played Sierra Lutheran on the road on Thursday, Oct. 5. Results were not available at press time.
They continue on the road for the next couple of games. On Wednesday, Oct. 11, they play Yerington. On Saturday, Oct. 14, they compete against North Tahoe.
Their next home game is Friday, Oct. 20, against Battle Mountain. Saturday, Oct. 21, they host West Wendover.
"Homecoming is a special week that takes a ton of planning. The Mustang volleyball team would like to thank all the parents and families that made this week so amazing. From the food, goodie bags, attendance at the games and supporting both JV and varsity on and off the court. We are so lucky to have the support system we do," said Halverson.
