The Pershing County girls soccer team played two homecoming games last week.
On Friday they lost 2-1 against the White Pine Ladycats.
They returned on Saturday to blank West Wendover 7-0.
It was Pershing's second game against the Ladycats. The first time, they lost 3-0 on their field in Ely.
"We've done much improving since then," said coach Kelly Brooks. "This time it was more evenly matched. Our defense played strong with big plays from Mady Grenz, Kimi Trowbridge, Anika Happy and Lexi Portillo."
Grace Kalsem started the attack on the opening kickoff. Yasmin Acosta scored Pershing County's goal in the first half on an assist from Kalsem. Junior goalie Lily Burt continues to improve.
"She saved our bacon multiple times," Brooks said. Miya Gallagher and Riley Harvey added to the attack with their plays.
Kimi Trowbridge heads the ball.
However, White Pine came to life at the beginning of the second half and tied the score at one. The race was on. Who would break the tie and pull ahead? It turned out to be White Pine.
"With about 15 minutes left in the game, they had a beautiful shot on goal to take the lead. It was a disappointing loss but at the time a testament to how far we've come in the five weeks since we played them. It was a hard-fought game and exciting to watch," Brooks said.
Pershing County returned to the field for their second homecoming game on Saturday.
This time they played the West Wendover Wolverines. Lovelock clinched seven goals, bringing their season total to 14 so far.
"The first time we played West Wendover, we beat them 6-2, but we have struggled to beat them at home so we had something to prove," Brooks said.
About 13 minutes into the game, Miya Gallagher scored her first goal of the season. Before the end of the first half, Lexie Portillo put the ball in the back of the net to bring the score to 2-0 in Lovelock's favor.
"At that point, we were firing a lot of shots but not getting them into the net. The West Wendover goalie had some amazing saves. After halftime, Riley Harvey scored a header goal off Yasmine Acosta's corner kick. It's the first time this team scored on a header in over ten years," Brooks said.
Pershing County wasn't done yet. Acosta scored two more goals. Portillo added another one. Freshman Nayeli Acosta scored her first goal of the season.
"The game was fun because we got to change up some positions and get some people on the field for some well-deserved playing time. It was a great way to close out homecoming week," Brooks said.
On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the girls played Fernley on the road.
On Wednesday, Oct. 4, they played Dayton. Results were not available at press time.
This Saturday, Oct. 7, they'll go to Battle Mountain to compete against their rival school.
