McDermitt sweeps Owyhee, Lund to improve to 6-1 in 1A East

The McDermitt High School volleyball continued its winning ways and moved a step closer in earning a top-two seed in the 1A East Regional Championships at the beginning of November.

A week after beating Owyhee on the Braves’ home floor, the Lady Bulldogs swept their way to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-12 win over Owyhee on Thursday afternoon in McDermitt.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 6-1 in league play and 10-5 overall with a three-set sweep of Lund on Saturday in McDermitt. Lund moved into the 1A East this season.

Against Owyhee, the Braves jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set when an ace by Breena Crutcher started a run that saw the Lady Bulldogs tie the set at 7-7.

Trailing 10-8, McDermitt scored the next nine points to take control. Alexis Scott began the rally with a tip to the pen floor and Crutcher added a kill. 

Two aces and a kill by Scott pushed the advantage to 17-10. McDermitt led 20-12 and were never threatened after that.

The two teams traded points at the beginning of the second set and Owyhee led 4-3, when Reign Crutcher provided a kill and Scott another ace to put McDermitt in front 8-4. 

The Braves rallied back as well and the set was tied at 9, 10, 11 and 12, until Nicolette Northrup provided an ace and Breena Crutcher and ace to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 14-12.

Leading 20-17, McDermitt scored the final five points of the set.

The Lady Bulldogs ran with that momentum and got two kills and two tips from Scott to run out to a 10-4 lead in the third set. Northrup closed out the match with two aces.

McDermitt hosts Carlin on Friday at 4 p.m. and travels to Eureka on Friday, Oct. 13, and Lund on Saturday, Oct. 14. 

Eureka is the only team to beat McDermitt in league play.
