Lady Bucks open title defense with four wins

Usually when you head to Las Vegas, one would want to stay a while and enjoy the sites.

The Lowry High School girls basketball team had other thoughts, as it opened the season last weekend at the Silverado Showdown.

In a whirlwind of 32 hours, the back-to-back 3A state champions drove to southern Nevada, played and won four games and headed back to Winnemucca.

The Lady Bucks’ Savannah Stoker and Britain Backus were named to the all-tournament team.

Lowry opened play on Friday afternoon with a 75-58 win over Legacy. The Lady Bucks doubled up the Longhorns 24-12 in the first quarter and led 45-19 at halftime. 

Lowry maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half, leading 58-41 after three quarters.

After traveling all day and playing in the afternoon, Lowry got a break until 8 p.m. where it took on Faith Lutheran. 

The Crusaders went 8-3 in the Southern 5A last year and reached the league semifinals, before losing to state champion Centennial.

The Lady Bucks raced out to a 19-6 advantage after eight minutes of play and extended the lead to 39-19 at halftime. The Crusaders came back with a 18-6 run in the fourth quarter to make the score closer.

Lowry was back on the floor at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and beat Clark 58-34. 

The Chargers went 12-0 in the Southern 4A a season ago, but lost in the state quarterfinals to Palo Verde

Lowry used a 25-3 run in the second quarter to lead 41-13 and never looked back. The Lady Bucks advantage grew to as many as 32 points in the third quarter.

Lowry closed out the tournament with a 54-14 win over Valley. 

The Lady Bucks led from the start and were up 51-13 after three quarters of play.

Lowry is back on the floor for three days in Reno for the Winter Tip-Off Tournament, beginning Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Galena at Reno High School.

Lowry takes on Bishop Manogue on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks. 

The Miners won the Northern 5A Regional Championship a season ago, losing to Coronado in the state semifinals.

The Lady Bucks close out the tournament on Saturday against Lassen, Calif., at 11 a.m. and Spanish Springs at 5 p.m. Both of those games are at Spanish Springs High School.
