Last Saturday, on a dazzling fall afternoon, the Pershing County Mustangs extended their nine-game winning streak.

They beat Lincoln County 20-6, earning a shot at the 2A state title in Las Vegas.

To make the win even sweeter it happened on the Mustangs' home field.

It was the semifinal round of the NIAA State  playoffs.

"Lincoln County is always challenging and this was no different," coach Mike Brooks said.

It is the first time that Pershing County as played in the title game, since beating Needles, Calif., in 2018.

By the third quarter the Mustangs led by 20-0. They pulled off the win despite a late touchdown from the Lynx.

Highlights of Pershing County's game included two rushing touchdowns from Izayuh McGlothin.

The junior RB/CB rushed for 50 yards in the second quarter and 32 yards in the first play of the third quarter.

Junior QB/FS Travis Donaldson took off on a 45-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

"The defense was able to make plays when they needed the Lynx to get off the field and held them to six points," Brooks added. "The kids did a great job of executing the game plan. Lincoln County has really good players on offense. We made some key stops when they threatened to score."

Pershing County's Donaldson and Luis Sanchez both landed interceptions. Tyrn Sam and Taylor Montes had multiple tackles for the Mustangs.

The Pershing County football team will compete at the home of the Las Vegas Raiders, Allegiant Stadium on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 9 a.m.

They will play the Lake Mead Eagles (9-1, overall, 4-0 in the 2A Southern).

"The kids are excited to play for a championship at Allegiant Stadium. Many of them are Raider's fans," Brooks said.

The coach pulled four players from JV to augment the varsity team - Jeffrey Elerick, Josiah Hunt, Jake Trowbridge and Ayden Montes.

Cece Canchola and the spirit squad are also making the trip.

It would be Lovelock's first state football title in five years. In 2018, Mike Brooks' first year as head coach, the Mustangs won their third straight state title with a 30-18 win over Needles.

In 2017, the Mustangs overcame a 17-point deficit to beat Battle Mountain 35-24.

In 2016, they defeated Yerington 14-7.

On Tuesday, Mustang fans will travel to Allegiant Stadium in the hopes that history will repeat itself.
