Nevada Department of Education provides clarification surrounding implementation of Assembly Bill 428

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education (NDE) wishes to clarify the status of the implementation of Assembly Bill (AB) 428, emphasizing that the statute takes effect upon passage and approval, with the effective date set for July 1, 2023, or alternatively July 1, 2024, contingent upon the specific section of the act being considered. It is important to note, AB428 has the force of law and does not require additional regulations before local school districts implement this law.

AB428 requires NDE, through the State Board of Education, to set the curriculum for the Teacher Academy College Pathway Program (Program). However, this doesn’t mean school districts must wait for regulations before starting the Program.

Given that Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teaching and Training already adheres to approved state standards and districts are actively using curriculum aligned with these standards, districts may start implementing the Program before curriculum regulations are fully defined.

“We understand the importance of clear guidelines, especially with AB428. Since it became law, we’ve been working with the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), the Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation (GOWINN), and the Clark County School District (CCSD),” said Jhone Ebert, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. “We look forward to collaborating with all of our districts to ensure today’s students have a clear pathway to become tomorrow’s educators. Many of Nevada’s future educators are currently in our classrooms and they are the ones that will lead us into the future.”
