Local cowboys, cowgirls shine at Alamo rodeo


The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its second to final stop on the fall schedule in Alamo on Oct. 28-29.

Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo and Brynn Barto topped the standings in the barrel racing average. 

Garijo won with a time of 26.887, which included a first-place finish in the second performance at 18.448. Barto placed second in the first performance with a time of 18.239 and an average of 36.856.

Humboldt County’s Matti Delong placed seventh in the average and Battle Mountain’s Italy Jo Holman and Amelia Lancaster were ninth and 17th, respectively.

Barto notched a third-place finish in the breakaway roping with a time of 7.20 and she was third in the second performance at 3.38. 

Despite missing her calf in the first performance, Holman came back to win the second performance at 3.13 and was fifth in the average. Garijo placed seventh in the average.

DeLong collected a fourth-place finish in girls cutting and Holman was eighth, while DeLong finished eighth in the goat tying average. Lancaster placed 12th, Barto 16th and Leigh Johnson 19th.

Holman led the way in pole bending with her average victory at 42.198. She won the second performance in a time of 20.919 and was second in the first performance. 

Garijo reversed the roles, winning the first performance in a time of 21.207 and was the runner-up in the second performance. 

She placed second in the average at 42.656. DeLong used two third-place finishes to stay in third in the average at 42.850 and Johnson and Lancaster were seventh and ninth, respectively, in pole bending.

DeLong and Garijo sit in second and third place in the all-around cowgirl standings and Holman and Lancaster are fourth and sixth, respectively. Barto stands in eighth place in the all-around standings.

Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong (143) tied for the top spot in boys cutting and won the second performance withy 143 points.

Teammates Lane Byrd and Cooper Hill were fifth and seventh, respectively. Lovelock’s Jacob Burke placed fourth in the average with 139 points.

Billy DeLong claimed the top spot in saddle bronc with rides of 61 and 72 points and he was second on steer wrestling with an average of 28.390. He won the first performance at 7.350. 

Battle Mountain’s Eli Lancaster finished fifth in the steer wrestling average. Eli Lancaster and Amelia Lancaster were fifth in the team roping average and Lane Byrd and Wells’ Tucker Shippy were ninth in team roping.

Billy Delong is out in front in the all-around cowboys standings and Eli Lancaster is fifth.


Junior High 

Results

In the junior high division, Louise DeLong won both performances of barrel racing to claim the average at 36.852. 

Teammate Taylor Hill (39.416) finished sixth in the average and Huntley Byrd (43.330) was ninth. Battle Mountain’s Landry Meiman placed 12th.

Byrd placed fifth in girls breakaway roping and Hill was 11th, while Meiman won the average in girls goat tying at 20.490. Hill finished seventh, DeLong eighth and Byrd ninth.

Byrd won the second performance of pole bending with a time of 21.790 and was third in the average. DeLong was the runner-up in the second performance with a time of 21.978 and was fifth in the average (48.972).

Byrd and Eureka’s Frank Buchanan took home the top spot in ribbon roping with an average of 29.100. The duo were second in each performance.

Bryce Fears and Fernley’s Jordan Process placed fourth in the average at 34.690. Logan Lancaster and Meiman were fifth in ribbon roping, Taylor Hill and White Pine’s Sawyer Bills were sixth and Louise DeLong and Henry Buchanan were eighth.

DeLong and Alamo’s Raelee Christian placed third in the team roping average, Lancaster and Elko’s Pete Mori were sixth and Fears and Byrd were eighth.

Bryce Fears won the boys breakaway average at 8.45 and he won the second performance in a time of 4.12. Fears placed sixth in boys goat tying and teammate Chance Thomas was 13th and Logan Lancaster finished fifth in chute dogging.  

Louise DeLong leads the all-around cowgirl standings, with Huntley Byrd and Hill fifth and sixth, respectively. Meiman is seventh in the standings. 

Logan Lancaster is 10th in the boys all-around standings and Bryce Fears and Ben Marvel and 11th and 12th. 

The final rodeo of the fall schedule takes place this weekend in Moapa.
