The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team said goodbye to its five seniors this past Thursday night, as it hosted West Wendover in the season finale for the Lady Longhorns.
The Wolverines, who are playoff bound for Lovelock next week, won in five sets and the Lady Longhorns finished the year 3-15 in the Northern 2A and 9-22 overall.
West Wendover scored the first four points of the opening set and increased the advantage to 11-3, forcing Battle Mountain to take a quick timeout.
The Lady Longhorns were within seven points at 14-7, following a kill from senior Galileah Benavidez, but the Wolverines closed out the set on a 11-7 run, including the final four points to win 25-14.
The second set turned into a wild one that would not end, with both teams having set point multiple times.
Battle Mountain claimed a 6-3 advantage after a kill by Lauryn Avey, but the set would be tied at 9, 11 and 12.
West Wendover took a 17-14 lead but missed a serve on the next point and the set would be tied at 18, 19, 20, 21,22, 23, 24, 25, 26,27 and 28. The Wolverines led 23-21 and then missed a serve and had set point at 24-23 after the Lady Longhorns were called for being in the net. Battle Mountain tied the set at 23 on a kill by Benavidez and led 24-23 after a West Wendover hitting error.

The Lady Longhorns retook the lead at 26-25 on a tip by senior Olivia Lemaire, when the Wolverines scored the next two points to have set point at 27-26. Aided by a hitting error, Battle Mountain scored the next three points to tie the match with a 29-27 score.
Battle Mountain was within three points in the third set at 10-7 after kills by Avey and Stevlana Martinez but West Wendover ended the set with a 15-5 run to win 25-12.
The back-and-forth fight continued, as Battle Mountain kept the match going by winning the fifth set but West Wendover held on in the fifth to claim the victory.
The Northern 2A Regional Championships take place Friday and Saturday at Pershing County High School in Lovelock. Yerington and West Wendover play Friday at 5 p.m. with the winner facing North Tahoe on Saturday at noon.
Pershing County and Coral Academy play at 6:45 p.m. on Friday and the winner takes on Incline on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. The championship is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
