Battle Mountain High School senior Sean Scherer won the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 12 feet at the NIAA 2A State Championship this past weekend at Liberty High School in Henderson.
The next closest mark in the event was second-place Blake Heaton at 10-9.
The Longhorns’ James Spealman (8-6) and Anthony Lopez-Hernandez (8-0) finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
Fellow senior Sean Bengoa earned two fourth-place finishes and a fifth-place outing in Henderson.
Bengoa was fourth in the high jump, as he cleared the bar at 5-8. Lake Mead’s August Shoopman won the event at 6-1.
Bengoa placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.467 seconds, a personal best. Shoopman placed third in a photo finish with Bengoa at 23.463.
The field of eight runners was separated by .83 seconds. Lincoln County’s Kristian Johnson won with a time of 23.15.
Bengoa finished fifth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.61, where the field was separated by .39 seconds. Awaken Christian’s Parker Whittmayer won at 11.53.
Blake Stuart finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-9.50. White Pine’s McCaul Nicholes won with a jump of 41-4.50.
Stuart placed fifth in the high jump at 5-8 and was seventh in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 19-5.75. Democracy Prep’s Kysean Pitts won the long jump at 21-0.
Senior Ben Disbro placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 39-5.50 and was eighth in the discus with a toss of 111-2.
Andy Wall placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.46 and the 4x200 relay of Bengoa, Elias Goodman, Stuart and Armando Eusebio were seventh with a time of 1:37.7.
Battle Mountain placed seventh as a team with 48.50 points and Lake Mead beat Lincoln County 123-114 for the state championship.
In the girls division, senior Jolena Ayers turned in a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 27.34. Lincoln County’s Abby Matthews won with a time of 26.21 and Avery Coombs of Awaken Christian was second at 27.27.
Ayers placed fourth in the 100-meter dash, stopping the watch at 13.52, as Coombs won with a time of 13.29, as the field was separated by .56 seconds.
Ayers was fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.89, her quickest time of the season. Matthews won the race at 59.83 and was the only runner under a minute.
Alexis Record finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 29-10.50, a personal best and teammate Jennifer Galvin placed seventh with a throw of 29-5. In addition, Record placed seventh in the discus with a toss of 74-11.
Bailey Elderkin placed seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 6-0 and Lindsey Bleak (27-6.75) and Lisette Haney (26-4.25) were seventh and eighth in the triple jump.
The 4x100 relay of Bleak, Haney, Taylor Clark and Ayers were third with a time of 53.86.
Democracy Prep won the race at 53.03. The 4x200 relay of Bleak, Elderkin, Clark and Haney placed fifth with a time of 1:59.92.
The 4x800 relay of Tessa Ostler, Alivia Liebhardt, Danielle Madalena and Galvin were sixth and the 4x400 relay of Ostler, Ivy Peterson, Madalena and Addison Payzant placed seventh.
Battle Mountain finished ninth as a team with 42 points. North Tahoe won the state championship with 131.50 points and Lake Mead was second at 77.
