Lowry High School junior Nomar Aguirre and senior Sydnee Pettis came back home from the NIAA 3A State Championships at Liberty High School with a little extra hardware.
Aguirre won state titles in the shot put and discus this past weekend.
Aguirre tossed the discus 158 feet, 9 inches to by nearly 10 feet over Fernley’s HayDen McGinnis. Elko’s Liam Moore was third at 140-5.
Aguirre had a throw of 51-3.50 in the shot put to beat Moapa Valle’s Logan Stewart (48-6.25).
The Buckaroos’ Tyson Terry had a personal best throw of 45-7.25 to place third in the shot put. Jesse Jeronimo placed fifth with a toss of 42-5.
Freshman Brent Kenison sent a personal best in the pole vault with mark of 12 feet, 6 inches to place third.
Senior teammate, Shaun Gilliland placed fourth, as he cleared 12-0. Springs Creek’s Tarron Metz and Jake Bradford were first and second at 13 feet, with Metz winning on fewer misses.
Lowry finished fifth in the team standings with 41 points. Moapa Valley won the state title with 123 points and Spring Creek (119.50) was second.
Pettis took home the long jump crown with a leap of 16-11, beating out South Tahoe’s Arya Saini, who had the same distance. Pettis came out on top on better jumps through the competition.
Pettis placed fourth in the 100-meter dash, as the field of seven was separated by .25 seconds. Sarah Coombs of Somerset Losse won at 12.66, with Durango’s Alyssa Harrod second at 12.73. Elko’s Tyra Christean was third at 12.731 and Pettis came in at 12.39 in a photo finish for the third spot.
Pettis ran a personal best 25.93 in the 200 meters to finish fourth as well. Clark’s Fawn Higgins won with a time of 25.28.
Freshman Kiana Head placed fourth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-10. Durango’s Shayla Kantarevic and Dayton’s Rachel Ply each cleared 4-11, with Kantarevic winning on missing fewer jumps.
Senior Mia Hernandez finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-6. Fernley’s Kiriann won with a mark of 11-0. Hernandez was eighth in the high jump at 4-6.
The 4x100 relay of Hernandez, Tariana Weatherspoon, Kepa Hilbish and Pettis were fourth with a time of 51.68. Durango won the state title in a time of 49.99.
Lowry placed 10th in team standings, scoring 36 points. Elko won the state title with 88 points and Durango (66) placed second.
