The Lowry High School track and field team made its way to Sparks and Reed High School last week for the Northern 3A Regional Championships.
Nomar Aguirre and Sydnee Pettis each won two individual events for the Buckaroos.
Aguirre swept the throwing events, winning the shot put with a toss of 52 feet, 10 inches for a personal best.
He won the vent by seven feet. Aguirre won the discus with a throw of 152-5, beating Fernley’s HayDen McGinnis by nearly 10 feet.
Pettis pulled off the victory in the 100-meter dash in a close finish with a time of 12.56 seconds. She narrowly beat Elko’s Tyra Christean (12.77) and South Tahoe’s Arya Saini (12.88).
After finishing second in the preliminaries the week before, Pettis win the long jump with a mark of 15-8.75.
Pettis was second in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 26.53. Christean won the race at 25.99.
The girls 4x100 relay captured a regional title with a time of 51.38, beating North Valleys (51.73) and Truckee (51.97).
Kianna Head and Mia Hernandez are headed to the state meet in the high jump after placing second and third, respectively. Head set a personal best at 4-10 and Hernandez cleared 4-8.
Hernandez qualified for the pole vault at state with her fourth-place finish at 8-6. Head added an eighth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 29-2.50.
Hannah Thompson placed fifth in the pole vault as set a personal best at 8-0 and Karyn Sanchez had a personal-best in the discus at 91-3 to place fifth.
Maite Avalos was seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 28.41.
The Lowry girls finished sixth in the team standings with 69.5 points. Elko won the regional title with 127 points and Truckee (110) was second.
North Valleys (93.5), Spring Creek (89.5) and South Tahoe (89) rounded out the top five.
Jesse Jeronimo (45-8.50) and Tyson Terry (44-11.25) advanced to the state meet in the shot put as part of the 1-2-3 Lowry finishes. Both of those throws were personal bests.
Brent Kenison set a personal best in the pole vault at 12-0 to place third and qualify for state.
Shaun Gilliland was fourth at 11-6 and Kaid Sanchez and Shane Gilliland were sixth and eighth, respectively at 11-6 as well.
Sanchez placed sixth in the long jump with a personal-nest mark of 18-9 and Ryan Utterback placed eighth in the 200 meters in a time of 24.05. Braden Hammargren was ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 36-6.75. The 4x100 relay placed seventh at 46.53.
Lowry was sixth in the team standings with 54.5 points. Spring Creek won the regional title with 192 points and Elko was second at 97.
The NIAA 3A State Championships take place this weekend at Liberty High School in Las Vegas.
