Eight Pershing County High School track and field athletes competed in the Northern 2A Regional Championships at Reed High School in Sparks this past weekend.
Compared to most of their meets, the weather cooperated with springlike temperatures.
Pershing County confronted top athletes from Battle Mountain, Coral Academy, Incline, North Tahoe and Yerington.
"It was a fun, warm two days," said coach Matt Fuller. "They were quite successful in the running events, setting many personal records."
Hayley Montes ran the 100 meters, 200 meters, the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.
She placed fourth in the 200 meters and 300-meter hurdles, which qualified her for the state meet.
On the boy's side, the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams included Josiah Hunt, Luis Sanchez, Izayuh McGlothin and Denzel Zaldivar.
Both relay teams made the cut for state. The boys finished second in the 4x200 and third in the 4x100.
The 4x400 relay team (Luis Sanchez, Ramon Sanchez, Angelo Gibson and Ashton Jimenez) took fifth in a stacked field of competitors.
Luis Sanchez ran on all three relay teams.
In addition to the relay, Gibson ran the 100 meters and set a personal record in the 400 meters at 58.37 seconds).
Jimenez ran the 400 meters in 62.50 seconds, also a PR. Ramon Sanchez set a PR in the 800 meters and competed in the long jump.
McGlothin ran the 200 meters. Hunt qualified to compete at the state level in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, 100 meters and 200 meters.
He placed fourth in the 100 meters and third in the 200 meters.
Based on their results, five athletes will travel to Liberty High School in Henderson for the State competition this weekend — Hayley Montes, Josiah Hunt, Luis Sanchez, Izayuh McGlothin and Denzel Zaldivar.
