The Battle Mountain High School softball team is headed back to the state tournament for the first time since 2015 after knocking off its rival in the Northern 2A Regional Championships in Lovelock this past weekend.
The Lady Longhorns entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and had little trouble with Yerington, beating the Lions 13-3 in the opening round.
Up next for the Lady Longhorns, was No. 1 seed and host, Pershing County.
The Mustangs swept the three games in league play this year and were undefeated in the Northern 2A.
Battle Mountain turned the tables on its rival and came away with a 6-5 win to advance and punch its ticket to the state championships.
Pershing County came back through the bracket to set up a rematch with Battle Mountain.
In another one-run game, the Mustangs forced a second title game beating the Lady Longhorns 2-1.
In the championship game, Battle Mountain held off Pershing County 8-5 to claim the regional title. The Lady Longhorns stand at 16-6-1 on the season.
Battle Mountain opened the NIAA 2A State Championships against White Pine on Thursday morning at Hixson Park in Reno. Pershing County took on Southern 2A champion, Needles, Calif.
The two losers played on Thursday afternoon, while the winners meet at 8 a.m. on Friday. The championship is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday.
