As it was the case for much of the spring season, Mother Nature wreaked havoc with the Northern 3A golfers last week.
The scheduled tournament to be hosted by South Tahoe High School at Genoa Lakes was canceled due to course conditions.
The Northern 3A moved to Sierra Sage Golf Course in the North Valleys of Reno on Tuesday, May 2, and didn’t fare much better.
Only a handful of teams and individuals finished the day due to the cold, windy, rainy and snowy conditions.
Fernley captured the Northern 3A championship as a team and will be joined at the state tournament by Truckee and Elko.
The NIAA 3A state championship will take place May 16-17 at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley.
Lowry’s Landon Esquivel had the second-lowest average on the season at 83 and was named to the Northern 3A first team and will compete in the state tournament as an individual for the Buckaroos.
Fernley’s Jacob Holmes was named the Northern 3A MVP, with an average of78.2.
Holmes won two of the first six tournaments, tied for first in two events and was second in another.
Joining Esquivel on the first team was Truckee’s Luke Brown, Drew Drollinger and Reed Loper, Elko’s Scott Hutnyak and Fernley’s Noah Davis.
The second team included Elko’s Will Marma, Fernley’s Caden Stanger, South Tahoe’s Johnny Womack and Sean Molesworth, Truckee’s Luke Cruz and North Valleys’ Derek Hester.
