LaRena's Race Reboot: Fundraising event will move to later in the year

For all of you who are wondering, “Where’s La Rena’s Race?” We are still here helping Humboldt and Lander County patients meet their cancer treatment obligations!

It has been 20 years since The LaRena Smith Bengoa, Run, Ride or Walk team (also known as LaRena’s Race) embarked on a mission to help local people in their battle against all kinds of cancer. The group assists anyone who applies, and submits a treatment plan or documentation of diagnosis, with an immediate $1,500 grant to use as needed. Our group has dispersed over $454,000.00 in grants to 423 plus people in Humboldt and Lander counties. However, with all of the positive accomplishments, COVID complicated the production of our once-a-year event, which was a 1, 3, or 5 mile race taking place on the Saturday before Mother’s Day every year. Last year because of the weather and conflicting events that had moved to that weekend during COVID, we had low turn out and have been forced to re-create our event at a different time.

Your continued support is essential to our success in helping people struggling even more with the rising costs of travel, lodging and meeting obligations as they receive treatment for this life-altering disease. We understand that you are used to hearing from us this month as we prepare for our event, and want to make sure you are confident that we continue to move forward. We are in the process of choosing a date in the late summer or early fall months when things are not quite as busy in terms of attracting participants.

Please keep us on your list of causes to support, and events to attend! Look for information on the La Rena’s Race reboot, and will be contacting you with information, and providing fresh advertising for our new event and for you as our supporter.

Thank you from our team, who have witnessed such need in our community and the surrounding area for this assistance! We appreciate your past support and look forward to working with you again in the coming months.
