BMHS track and field team competes at Smitty Classic

The Battle Mountain High School track and fields team was in Reno on Saturday, March 18, for the Smitty Track and Field Classic at Wooster High School.


Senior Jolena Ayers notched a runner-up finish in the 200 meters with a time of 28.84 seconds to go with a fourth-place outing in the 400 meters (28.84) and seventh in the 100-meter dash at 13.90.


Freshman Lissette Haney placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 5.5 inched and Haney was 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 27-8.25.


Bailey Elderkin (27-10) and Lindsey Bleak (27-1) were seventh and 10th in the triple jump and Bleak placed 15th in the 200 meters with a time of 32.48. Jennifer Galvan earned a top-10 finish in the shot put, placing seventh with a toss of 26-4.25 and she was 15th in the discus at 60-5. Alexis Record placed 12th in the discus with a throw of 61-2.5.


On the boys side, freshman Joey Smith won the 110-meter hurdles in the frosh-soph division with a time of 20.50. Ben Disbro won the shot put with a toss of 38-4, while Disbro was second in the discus at 113-6. Andres Molina and Hunter Gilbert had strong finishes in the shot put and discus in the frosh/soph division.


Sean Scherer was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 9-6 and Blake Stuart (5-8) and Sean Bengoa (5-4) were fourth and eighth in the high jump. Stuart was seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 34-4.75 and Scherer was 10th (33-0.75) and Ari Kyllonen was second in the triple jump in the frosh/soph division at 31-8.5.


Armando Eusebio placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 18-2 and Bengoa placed fourth in the 100 meters in a time of 12.02.


Battle Mountain was unable to make it to the Fernley this past Friday due to weather conditions and the closure of Interstate 80 outside of Winnemucca.


Battle Mountain hosts its meet on Friday at 9 a.m.
