Pershing County baseball hosts Incline for doubleheader

Pershing County High School baseball coach Jared Jensen called it "an overall great group performance."

Pershing County hosted the Incline Highlanders for a doubleheader this past Saturday.

The Mustangs racked up two league wins (12-7, 12-8). It was the first time in six years they beat the Highlanders.

"We saw excellent pitching from Blake Burrows and Trenton Rhodes," said Jensen.

In the first game, Rhodes allowed six hits, six runs and struck out eight Highlanders.

Burrows recorded the win in the second game. He allowed two runs on one hit and struck out eleven.

"We also saw a lot of improvement at the plate this week as that was one of our main focuses," said Jensen.

The Mustangs outhit the Highlanders in both games. They collected 12 hits in the opener and nine in the second. Taylor Montes, Wyatt Diaz and Burrows each got two hits in the first game.

Burrows went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in hits in the second game.

The opener was tied at five with the Mustangs batting in the bottom of the fifth when Tyler Miller drew a walk, scoring one run to break the tie.

Pershing clinched the win with six more runs in the inning.

In the second game, the Mustangs were down 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but pulled off a big fifth inning with five runs.

"We've had a couple of games this year where we would fight back to get into the game, but come up short and let it slip away. We like the improvement but have a long ways to go. We're happy and feel like we're on the right track. Winning against Incline is the first step in accomplishing our goals for the season," said Jensen.

The Mustangs hosted Silver Stage on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

They'll play Incline again on Tuesday, April 4, in Incline Village.

This Friday, the Mustangs host Mineral County for a non-league doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m.
