As weather has played havoc with the Lowy High School track and field team in the early part of the season, the squad was able to compete at the High Desert Frosh/Soph Invite at McQueen High School on Friday, March 17.
Freshman Kianna Head earned a first-place finish in the high jump for the Lowry girls, as she cleared the bar at 4 feet, 8 inches.
Head added an eight-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.71 seconds.
Fellow freshman Tariana Weatherspoon was fourth in the high jump at 4-4. Weatherspoon placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 20.35 and she was 12th in the long jump.
Ashlyn Bottoms placed seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 7-0 and Kianna Head placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 13-7.
Morelia Magana (23-3,25) and Kailani Rodriguez (22-11.25) were seventh and eighth in the shot put and Rodriguez placed ninth in the discus with a toss of 25-2.50.
Maite Avalos finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.14, seventh in the 200 meters (30.09) and ninth in the 100-meter dash (14.81). Kepa Hilbish was seventh in the 100-meter dash at 14.41 and 10th in the 200 meters (30.56).
The 4x100 A team of Avalos, Alivia Galvan, Hilbish and Irydianna Ramirez were third in a time of 58.18 and the B squad of Allyssa Venzor, Lucy Brock, Clementine Garreau and Athena Chiaratti were fifth at 63.68.
Lowry was fifth in the team standings with 43,5 points. McQueen won the event with 256 points followed by Spanish Springs (177.5), Fernley (82) and Reno (56).
On the boys side, freshman Coby Thacker finished third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:08.93 and he was fifth in the 800 meters at 2:21.84.
Shane Gilliland placed third in the pole vault at 10-0, with teammates Brent Kenison (8-6) and Rogelio Hernandez (7-6) placing fourth and seventh. Gilliland added a 12th-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 16-5.75.
Kenison (17.4.50), Conner Nelson (17.1.50) and Bradyn Snyder (16-10.50) were seventh, eighth and ninth in the long jump and Corbin Berezay placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 31-.3.50.
Kenison (5-2), Austin White (5-2) and Gilliland were sixth, seventh and eighth in the high jump and Jonathan Moser placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 87-10 and he was ninth in the shot put at 33-6.25.
The 4x400 relay of Snyder, Berezay, Nelson and Ryder Huitt were fifth with a time of 4:11.20.
The Lowry boys were fifth in the team standings as well, scoring 41 points. Spanish Springs led the way with 197 points, followed by McQueen (125), Reno (109) and South Tahoe (42).
Lowry is scheduled to travel to Fernley on Friday for the Invitational.
The Buckaroos will split their teams on March 31-April 1, sending a group to Battle Mountain and another to Sparks for the Reed Invitational.
