Pershing County hosts preseason tourney

It was a big weekend for the Pershing County Mustangs as they opened baseball season at the high school on Friday. 

Pershing County beat Battle Mountain for the first time in five years (10-6) but lost to Quincy, Calif., (3-1) and Sparks (22-8).

PCHS takes late lead against Longhorns

The game was tied at six with the Mustangs batting in the bottom of the third when Trenton Rhodes was hit by a pitch, driving in a run.

Wyatt Hughes had a strong outing pitching against the Longhorns. He surrendered six runs on three hits over three innings, striking out three. Wyatt Diaz threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Blake Burrows went 3-3 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in hits. He stole three bases as Pershing ran wild on the base paths.

Rhodes pitched six and one-third innings against the visitors. He allowed four hits and three runs while striking out 11.

Taylor Montes went 1-2 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in hits. Quincy pulled away in the fourth inning with one run.

The Railroaders jumped out with a triple, single, and double in the first inning. But the Mustangs never gave up.

“We played Sparks tough and fought back to make the game go six innings,” said coach Jared Jensen. 

The Mustangs scored three runs in the fifth inning with Taylor Montes and Tyler Miller both driving in runs. 

Ayden Montes took the loss for the Mustangs. He allowed three hits and five runs, walking zero. Burrows led Pershing with two hits in three at bats.

“We played well this weekend. This group led by our seniors (Noel Zaldivar, Blake Burrows and Wyatt Diaz) has a bright future. We also have a lot of young talent that will see tremendous growth this season,” said Jensen.

The freshmen include Ayden Montes, Juan Gonzalez, Trenton Rhodes, Logan Hunt and Jacob Henderson. Jacob Burke, Wyatt Hughes and Tyler Miller are sophomores. Conner Fecht is a junior.

“We have a great coaching staff with Jayce Montes, Jake Montes, Brian Smokey, Tony Nelson and Russell Fecht. 

The program is fortunate to have so many people who care and want to see the kids succeed,” Jensen said. 

On Friday, March 10, the boys travel to Virginia City. 

They’ll begin league play on Saturday, March 18, at 10 a.m. and noon. On Tuesday, March 21, they’ll host Silver Stage at 4 p.m.
