After nearly 12 hours on the road to get to Mesquite on the Nevada/Arizona border, the Lowry High School softball team picked up three wins in four games at the Virgin Valley tournament.
Saturday’s championship games was canceled, as weather hit and to allow the Lady Bucks to get back home through the snowstorm in central and northern Nevada.
Virgin Valley 5, Lowry 1
Lowry opened up the tournament against the host and reigning 3A state runner up. The Bulldogs broke open a scoreless time with three runs in the top of the third inning and added two more runs in the fourth to go in front 5-0.
A solo home run by Savannah Stoker in the bottom of the fourth inning, provided the lone run for the Lady Bucks. Stoker had two of Lowry’s four hits.
Megan Cook and Crisslyn Rodriguez each had one hit.
After missing last year due to an injury, senior Bree Dunckhorst returned to the circle for Lowry and threw a complete game. She allowed five runs on eight hits. She struck out 11 and walked one.
Lowry 14,
Lincoln County 4
In its second game on Thursday, Lowry evened its record at 1-1 with a 14-4 win over Lincoln County of the Southern 2A.
Lowry took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Bailey Peterson that scored Stoker.
The Lady Bucks increased the advantage to 3-0 in the second innings, as Natalya Guizar scored on a passed ball and Rodriguez scored on a ground out by Presley Hayes.
Lincoln County tied the game with three runs in the top of the third inning, only to see Lowry answer with four runs in the bottom of the third and three runs in the fourth and fifth inning to secure the victory.
The Lady Bucks pounded out 14 hits, including three from Stoker and Peterson and two each from Shelbie Hoyt and Cambria Tisue.
Maddison McClure, Hayes, Rodriguez and Guizar each had one hit. Rodriguez had three RBI and four runs scored and Hoyt, Peterson, McClure and Hayes had two RBI apiece.
Guizar, a freshman, made her Lowry debut in the circle and allowed four runs (none earned) on no hits. She walked 11 and struck out seven.
Lowry 20, Legacy 5
In its lone game on Friday, Lowry had little trouble against Legacy from Las Vegas.
The Lady Bucks plated eight runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding eight more runs in the fourth inning to lead 20-2 at one time.
Legacy scored three times on the bottom of the fourth but the game still ended on the 15-run rule.
Jada Matheny and Cook each had three hits, as Lowry finished with 16 as a team. Hoyt, Stoker and Peterson each had two hits. Tisue, Guizar and Rodriguez had one hit apiece.
Guizar picked up her second win in as many games, allowing five runs on five hits. She struck out six and walked five.
Lowry 6,
Elko 3
The two league rivals got an early look at each other in a non-conference game. The contest was set for Friday night, but games ran long and was played at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The Indians struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning but the Lady Bucks scored the next six runs and held on for the win.
McClure picked two hits for Lowry and Hoyt, Peterson and Guizar each had one hit.
Dunckhorst picked up the victory in the circle, allowing three runs on five hits. She struck out 12 and walked seven.
Lowry was scheduled to host Sparks on Wednesday and results were not available at press time. Lowry is scheduled to host Wooster on Friday at 3 p.m.
