Battle Mountain opens season with Pershing County tournament

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team began its season this past weekend at the Pershing County tournament in Lovelock.


The Longhorns went 0-4 on the weekend, losing twice to Sparks 7-0 and 14-4, to Quincy, Calif., (20-3) and to host Pershing County (10-6).

Against Pershing County, Battle Mountain plated three runs in the top of the first inning to go in front but the Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the first and took a 5-3 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.


Battle Mountain jumped ahead with three runs in the third inning, only to see Pershing County score the final five runs.




Sparks 7, 


BMHS 0


In the first meeting on Friday, Sparks scored two runs apiece in the first two innings to lead 4-0 and kept Battle Mountain at bay from there. 


The Railroaders added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning.




Quincy 20, 


BMHS 3


In its first game on Saturday, Battle Mountain tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs, but the Trojans plated 14 runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to win by the run rule.


Braden Wahrenburg, Jake Perrone, Angel Guadarrama, Matt Moore, Aiden Ruggles and Anthony Silva had base hits. Guadarrama had a two RBI. Moore also had an RBI.




Sparks 14, BMHS 4


In the final game of the tournament, Sparks grabbed a 8-0 lead after scoring three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings. Battle Mountain scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. 


Battle Mountain travels to Silver Springs on Friday, March 17, for a doubleheader with Silver Stage beginning at 2 p.m. 


The series concludes on Saturday, March 18, at 10 a.m.
