This past Saturday Lovelock hosted its 21st annual medal meet at the community pool. Swimmers from Hawthorne and Yerington competed against their hosts.
The Lovelock kids stood out in their red and black swimsuits.
Hawthorne experienced a shortage of lifeguards this season, making for some schedule changes.
That's one problem Lovelock doesn't have. The pool has trained about 400 lifeguards since it opened on July 4, 1974.
Many of those were high school students working their first job like Lily Burt, 16. She lifeguarded at Saturday's medal meet.
Lifeguard Lily Burt keeps an eye on everyone on her first day on the job.
"To train we had to learn CPR, different ways to save drowning victims, and how to treat major and minor injuries," she said.
Burt learned how to swim at the Lovelock pool. She'll start her junior year this fall. You'll find her on the soccer field playing goalie.
It takes the coordinated efforts of dozens of volunteers to pull off the medal meet. A few familiar faces included Mackenzie Hodges, Rich Wagner, Steve Evenson, Lee Houston and, of course, Jim and Pat Rowe. Evenson quipped that he's now timing kids of kids he timed long ago.
Avani Rosas competes in the medal meet.
Yerington will host its medal meet on Saturday, June 24. The Rowes will be the Grand Marshals of the Frontier Days Parade on Saturday, Aug 5.
