Mike Brooks watched the weather on Friday, June 9, the day of the annual Mustang 5K/Walkathon. "We had a little scare with rain but it cleared up nicely. There were no thunderstorms so we proceeded."
Conner Fecht turned in 31 laps in 60 minutes. Josiah Hunt finished with 29. Ryan Houston crossed the finish line first.
"Public turnout was not great. We didn't have a ton of preregistration and the weather scared off more people. But we're thankful for those who showed up. We had a great time," Brooks said.
The City of Lovelock sponsored the event. Joe Crim and his crew set up blockades along the route. Marcus Allen and Logan Hunt spent hours helping set up the course.
After the race, Janice Rutherford from DVI supplied popcorn and Lee Houston had snow cones for everyone.
Nicole and Greg Reitz served tacos. Brooks thanks them and Stephanie Minor (owner of Makers) for the tee-shirts and "being so easy to work with."
This was the first year Brooks paired the 5K with a walkathon.
He liked having the race at the high school because of the ease of tracking how many laps the runners completed for their sponsorships.
"The football players exceeded my expectations both with sponsorships and effort during the fun run. I can't express how proud of them I am," he said. " I also want to thank the athletes and parents who came out and anyone who sponsored the athletes."
If you didn't make it to this fund-raiser, there will be a flag football tournament at the high school on July 1 starting at 5 p.m. Players can put together a team or compete as free agents. All skill levels are welcome.
