Huntley Byrd wins state title in junior high pole bending

Humboldt County’s Huntley Byrd earned the pole bending state championship this season in the junior high division of the Nevada High School Rodeo Association.

She will be headed to the National Junior High School Rodeo Finals in Perry, Ga., from June 18-24 in three events.

Byrd came in the state finals in Winnemucca leading the pole bending standings and did not give it up. 

She bounded back from knocking down a pole in the first performance and won the final two performances with times of 20.658 and 20.313.

Byrd started the state finals weekend in sixth in breakaway roping and jumped to fourth and qualified for the nationals. 

She had times of 10.450, 4.96 and 3.12 to place second in the short go around. 

She was fifth in team roping with Lane Byrd and the duo will be headed to Georgia in a couple weeks.  

Lane Byrd is headed to Georgia in tie-down roping as well, with his third-place finish in the season-long standings. Byrd was third in the short go of tie-down roping.

Ben Marvel was the reserve state champion in saddle bronc steer wrestling. 

Marvel won the first performance at the state finals with a score of 54 and was second in the second performance at 43.

Logan Marshall was the reserve state champion in tie-down roping and placed fourth in chute dogging.  Marshall placed second in the first performance of tie-down roping with a time of 28.450. He won the second performance at 15.830.

Humboldt County’s Ben Marvel competes in the saddle bronc steer riding at State Finals. He ended up Reserve State Champion.

Marshall jumped from fifth to fourth in chute dogging at the state finals and he won the short go with a time of 3.04.

Hazen Root won the state title in .22 rifle and Wyatt Thomas was sixth in .22 rifle and both will head the national finals.

Louise Delong qualified for the finals in Georgia in ribbon roping and pole bending. DeLong and Eureka’s Henry Buchanan were third in ribbon roping and had top-10 finishes in each go around at the state finals. 

DeLong placed fourth in the season-long pole bending standings and won the first performance with a time of 21.675. 

She knocked down a pole in her second run but came back to place third in the short go at 21.359. 

Humboldt County’s Wyatt Thomas qualified for the national finals in the .22 rifle.
