Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada will open center in Winnemucca

Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (CCNN) and the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting on Thursday, June 8 at Noon at the new Neighborhood Center located at 625 Sheehan Street.  The newest neighborhood center expands Catholic Charities’ brick and mortar footprint outside of Washoe County and into rural Nevada.

The new Winnemucca Neighborhood Center is made possible in part by a grant from the Nevada Department of Agriculture: ARPA Nevada Community Food Access Grant.  The grant focuses on the sustainability of food services and relationship building that supports Nevada food producers and businesses while addressing food insecurity of the most vulnerable by reducing the challenge of accessibility.

The Neighborhood Center will be CCNN’s newest Client Choice Pantry and the only one in rural northern Nevada.

For the past two years, CCNN has been providing services to residents in Winnemucca and surrounding communities via its mobile food pantry and case management vans.

Additionally, the grant supports the continuation of the relationships with Nevada farmers, ranchers, producers and businesses to purchase food to distribute to the underserved in northern Nevada.

Much like a grocery store, a Client Choice Pantry allows clients to select their own food from a variety of meats, dairy, fresh produce and non-perishable items in place of receiving a pre-packed or a standard box of groceries. Clients select items they need to fill a pantry and foods they like or that fit their family.  The pantry offers culturally specific food options to cater to shoppers’ food preferences. Client Choice pantries add an element of dignity for those who visit.

In addition to the food pantry, case workers provide resources and added services such as health screenings, vaccinations, immigration assistance, housing assistance, workforce development, parenting classes, SNAP benefits and more.

St. Vincent Food Pantries are where people go when they simply need to put food on the tale.  Annually, St. Vincent’s Food Pantries, the largest food distribution pantry in the state of Nevada, distributes over 300,000 boxes of food for families in need.

The Winnemucca Neighborhood Center is a one stop-shop open Wednesdays from 11 am - 3 pm.
