When Brett Wilkins' in-laws asked him if he'd reopen the Lovelock Speedway, he said he'd think it over. For one thing, he lives in Fallon. Also, the track had been closed for two years.
"Everything from plumbing to equipment was in bad shape from sitting, not to mention the track surface itself," he said.
Luckily for Lovelock, Brett and Diana Wilkins opted to reopen the Speedway for the 2023 season.
"I couldn't have done it without help from Stan Dunham, Jack Cooney, John Minor, Diana, and Ed and Barbara Macedo," said Brett Wilkins. "Thanks to great sponsors and excellent volunteers, we are bringing it back."
"I can't stress enough how much I appreciate my volunteers. If it wasn't for them the racing here would never happen. It is due to their commitment that I can pull this track together and put on racing," he added.
In 2008, Brett's in-laws, Ed and Barbara Macedo, built and opened the quarter mile dirt track on 2690 Seven Troughs Road. They're as excited as Brett about its upcoming events.
What's next?
Don't miss Lovelock's first-ever demolition derby.
Lovelock is gearing up for its annual Frontier Days celebration on Aug. 4, 5 and 6. The Speedway will be an integral part of the festivities.
It will have races on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5. Friday racing starts at 7 p.m. Saturday's demolition derby starts after the main event which begins at 6 p.m.
They'll be racing IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, Hobby stocks and Dwarf Cars.
The combined point winners in each class will win custom-made rodeo style belt buckles courtesy of All Things Western.
The racers look forward to a weekend of what Wilkins describes as "good ole dirt track racing at its finest."
