On Saturday, July 1, dozens of flag football players competed in one of the biggest fundraisers of the year.
They started at 5 p.m. When the sun set, the energy level kicked up a notch.
The turnout pleased athletic director and coach Mike Brooks. It was the fourth annual tournament, which usually draws about eight teams. This year 12 teams played. Brooks exceeded his goal of bringing the sport to new players.
"The sport continues to gain popularity at the middle and high school and beyond. Flag football is a fun way for our kids to get out, be active and develop some football skills along the way," said Brooks.
On Saturday night, teams from Nevada and California played two seeding games before their bracket.
The 2-0 teams played in the A Division. The 1-1 teams competed in the B Division. The 0-2 teams comprised the C Division.
About 150 spectators watched from the bleachers or from under awnings set up for shade.
The A Division champs were "Purple Reign," from San Jose, California. The "Gummy Worms" from Reno won the B Division. The "South McCarron All Stars" from Reno walked off with the C Division title.
"Thanks to everyone who came out. It was awesome and turned out to be a perfect evening. A special thank you to all the helpers and referees. A special thanks to Chick-fil-A for feeding us and to Stephanie Minor for the gear," said Brooks.
"Purple Reign" from San Jose, California, celebrate their win at the flag football tournament on July 1.
