Spring Creek uses late rally to knock off Lowry
The Lowry High School boys gave up a fourth-quarter lead in its match-up with Spring Creek on Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Winnemucca, as the Spartans scored 27 point in the last eight minutes to come away with a 64-55 win.
The loss dropped Lowry to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the Northern 3A East. The Buckaroos are 5-0 against the Northern 3A West.
Spring Creek led for much of the opening quarter, when Lowry went on a 6-0 run started by Dempsey Jenkins and capped off by a bucket and two free throws from Isaac Danner to give the Buckaroos a 10-8 advantage.
However, the Spartans scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 15-14 after eight minutes of play.
After a bucket by Jenkins, the Buckaroos’ Lance Brinegar caught fire with eight straight points, including two 3-pointers to give Lowry a 24-19 lead, finishing a 10-2 run. The Buckaroos went into halftime with a 29-23 lead.
Lowry led by as many as nine points in the third quarter at 34-25 after a pull-up 3-pointer from Jordan Bills.
The senior knocked down another 3-pointer late in the third quarter, but Spring Creek rallied to tie the game at 34.
A running shot by Bills and a free throw by Kayson Garner gave the Buckaroos a 41-37 lead with 6:44 to play, when the Spartans went on a 10-0 run in less than two minutes to go in front 47-41 with 4:59 to play.
Danner stopped the run with a free throw, only to have Spring Creek come back down the floor and make a 3-pointer.
Spring Creek pushed the advantage to double figures at 54-44 with 2:32 to go. When Lowry cut the margin to 54-49 with 1:50 left on the clock after baskets by Jenkins and Bills and a free throw by Anthony Guzman.
That was as close as the Buckaroos got, as the Spartans made their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Jenkins paced Lowry with 13 points and Danner and Bills added 12 points apiece. Brinegar netted eight points, Matthew Casalez four and Guzman and Garner had three points apiece.

This past Saturday, Lowry beat Wooster 50-34 to stay unbeaten against Northern 3A West teams
Lowry was originally set to play Elko this past Saturday but that game was moved to Tuesday due to a lack of officials. Results of the game were unavailable at press time.
Lowry travels to Fallon on Friday to play Churchill County at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Bucks will hit the road on Tuesday, Jan. 31, to play at South Tahoe at 7:30 p.m.
