Six Pershing County High School wrestlers competed in Fernley’s Vaquero Classic last weekend. They included Xavier Weatherman at 120 pounds, Jeffrey Elerick (132), Angelo Gibson (132), Tavis Lawrence (132), Wyatt Hughes (150) and Logan Hunt (215).
“We were happy with all of their performances. Everybody left with at least one win,” said coach Mike Brooks.
The boys competed against athletes from nearly two dozen schools. Pershing finished in the middle (ninth place) with 72 points. Fernley came in first. Their 31 wrestlers racked up 276.5 points. Fallon and Battle Mountain placed second and third respectively.
Hughes went 3-1 and finished second in his weight range. Elerick went 4-1 and placed third.
“Jeff and Wyatt continue to rack up wins,” said Brooks.
Weatherman finished fourth after going in unseeded. He went 4-2 for the tournament. Gibson went 3-2 and placed fifth.
On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Pershing County competed in the AA Northern League Duals in Yerington. Results were not available at press time. On Friday, Jan. 27, they’ll dual in Battle Mountain.
Be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 4, when Lovelock hosts the AA Northern Regional Championships starting at 9 a.m.
The season culminates Feb. 10-11 at the Winnemucca Events Center. They’ll host the NIAA State Championships. Pershing County’s wrestlers hope to bring home many medals.
