PCHS girls split with West Wendover, Battle Mountain

The Pershing County High School girls basketball program made its annual trek to West Wendover last week. 

The Lady Mustangs played on Friday, stayed the night and competed against Battle Mountain on Saturday.

The girls had mixed results over the two days. They lost to West Wendover 43-37 but beat Battle Mountain 45-26. Pershing County now stands third in the Northern 2A at 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the league.

“We struggled to score the ball in West Wendover. As a team, we left so many points out there, because of missed easy opportunities. It was one of those nights that didn’t go our way,” said coach Lee Houston.

Raegan Burrows led the scoring with 18 points. Kaydance Happy and Aaliyah Allen added six each. Anna Happy scored five.

The girls regrouped after their loss and beat Battle Mountain in Longhorn country. 

“We played much better. Defensively, we played really well, which turned into easy scoring opportunities for us. Raegan (Burrows), Taylor (Garland), Yasmine (McKinney) and Anna (Happy) did an amazing job pressuring their guards throughout the game,” said Houston. “We got back on track.”

Burrows led the attack with 18 points. Kaydance Happy added nine. Aaliyah Allen and Anna Happy scored seven and five points respectively.

The girls have now played every team in the 2A at least once. 

They look forward to playing each for the second time - especially the two they lost against - West Wendover and North Tahoe.

The Mustangs play Incline on the road on Friday, Jan. 27. Earlier this month Pershing County came out on top against the Highlanders 59-15.

The Lady Mustangs host North Tahoe this Saturday at 2 p.m. North Tahoe is undefeated (6-0) in the 2A. Pershing County lost to them on the road earlier this month by two points, 32-30. 

The girls and coaches hope for a big turnout and fan support. The game starts at 2 p.m.
