It was a challenging week for the PCHS boys basketball team. They lost two league games on the road — one in West Wendover 69-36 and one in Battle Mountain 60-41. They played hard and look forward to the rest of the season.
Pershing County stands fifth in the Northern 2A at 8-10 overall, and 3-4 in the league.
“We hit some adversity this weekend. West Wendover (6-0) came out fast and we didn’t match their energy,” said coach Jesse Canchola.
The West Wendover Wolverines showed why they are the top-ranked team in the 2A. At the half Lovelock trailed by 42-13.
The Mustangs had a big third period and showed their capabilities by scoring 17 points but it was too little too late.
Travis Donaldson led Lovelock’s attack with 24 points. Izayuh McGlothin added eight. Taylor Montes, Marshall Happy and Aaron Kienbaum each scored two points.
“We came out too comfortable against Battle Mountain and the game got away from us quickly,” Canchola said. “We played a much better second half which shows we weren’t going to lay down. That shows character.”
Donaldson led Pershing’s scoring with 14 points. Kaden Chambers also scored in the double digits with 13.
“Being so young these experiences will happen. But also being so young means we have room to learn from these losses and get better. It’s a long season and we have to continue to fight for wins,” Canchola said.
This Friday, the Mustangs travel to Incline to play the Highlanders (6-0), the second-ranked team in the 2A.
On Saturday, Pershing County hosts North Tahoe (4-2), the third-ranked team.
The game starts at 3:30 p.m. The boys and their coaches hope for a large group of supportive fans.
