It was a busy week for the Lowry High School wrestling team with duals in Winnemucca and Idaho and a tournament in Fernley.
Lowry hosted it senior night on Wednesday, Jan. 18 with a 42-34 win over Fernley and 65-15 victory over Battle Mountain.
“I appreciate them coming over to give us a senior night,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “We haven’t had the chance to do that in a while. It was a good night for us. You never know in duals. The match-ups fell right for us against Battle Mountain. That is a good team.”
Jhett Harber started off the Fernley dual with a pin, but The Vaqueros came back to take a 9-6 lead after winning the next two matches.
The teams traded wins with Brayden Dennis, Logan Jonas, Coda Nichols and Brenton Baker getting wins for the Buckaroos
Fernley led 34-20 with two matches to go, when Wade Mori gave Lowry the lead for good, as he pinned Todd Wickenden. Damon Fetty won the last match by forfeit.
Battle Mountain won the opening match against Lowry but it was all Buckaroos from there.
The Longhorns won two other matches at 106 and 113 pounds, with the Buckaroos sweeping through the others.
Lowry competes in Skyview duals
Lowry sent part of its team to Idaho this past Saturday to compete in the Skyview duals. This is this first time the Buckaroos have gone to the meet. Lowry went 3-2 in its five duals.
“For our first dual we drew powerhouse Meridian,” Brooks said. “It did not go well for us but they do that to everyone. They are a great team. However, the kids responded well and made a decent day out of it. We won three straight against Centennial, Capital and Boise before coming up short against New Plymouth. It was worth the trip up there. We got to wrestle different teams at a good level. I’m sure we are better as a result.”
Meridian 78, Lowry 0
Lowry took on Meridian and the Idaho powerhouse won every match. Chris Gildone and Nichols saw their matches go the distance.
Lowry 42, Capital 35
Lowry bounced back with a 42-35 win, where Marcas Ricci (120) and Baker start off with pins to give Lowry a 12-0 lead. Capital won at 132 and 138 pounds to close the gap to 12-8, when Billy DeLong (144), Fetty (150) and Harber (157) reeled off wins to give Lowry a 30-8 lead. The advantage shrunk to 36-32, when a forfeit by Kruz Gomez at 106 pounds preserved the win.
Lowry 57, Boise 18
Lowry won the first eight matches, a Nichols, Ricci, Baker, Erick Valencia , Gildone, DeLong, Fetty and Harber won their matches to give the Buckaroos a 45-0 lead. The advantage shrunk to 45-18 but Jonas won by forfeit and Gomez pinned his opponent for the final outcome.
Lowry 42,
Centennial 25
Lowry jumped out to a 24-3 lead against Centennial as Gomez won by forfeit, Nichols and Valencia won by decision and Ricci and Gildone pinned their opponents. Harber and Dennis picked up wins by pin as well.
New Plymouth 47, Lowry 36
Lowry grabbed the early lead at 6-0 after a pin by Baker, only to see New Plymouth win the next four matches to go in front 23-6. Harber stopped the run with a pin at 157 pounds, but New Plymouth stretched out the lead to 41-12.
The Buckaroos won four of the last five matches, as Jonas, Gomez, Nichols and Ricci picked up wins.
Lowry finishes seventh at Vaquero Invitational
A second group of wrestlers went to Fernley this past weekend for the Vaquero Invitational and Lowry was seventh as a team.
Emilio Magana went 4-0 on the day and won the 150-pound weight class. He had three pins on the day, beating Pershing County’s Wyatt Hughes in the championship.
Mori turned in a runner-up finish for the Buckaroos, placing second at 144 pounds. He had four pins on the day. He lost 9-7 to Wells’ Tanner Hall in the championship.
Javier Gonzalez was fourth at 138 pounds and Logan Ricci was sixth at 126 pounds.
Lowry travels to Spring Creek on Friday and Saturday for the Northern 3A duals.
