BMHS wrestlers finish third in Fernley

It was a busy week for the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team with duals in Winnemucca and the Vaquero Invitational in Fernley.


On Wednesday, Jan. 18, Battle Mountain was in Winnemucca for a dual with Fernley and Lowry. The Longhorns beat the Vaqueros 43-36 and lost 65-15 to Lowry. Against the Buckaroos, Stone Whitlock, Cruz Jimenez and Sean Scherer picked up wins.


Against Fernley, Battle Mountain opened an 18-0 lead after a forfeit to Andy Wall and pins by Asher Bundrock and Whitlock. Fernley won the next three matches to tie the dual at 18, when Ben George gave Battle Mountain the lead for good at 285 pounds with a 3-2 win over Xavier Phillips. 


Jimenez followed with a decision win and Scherer pinned Alex Juliot to make the score 31-18. The teams split matches from there, with Wyatt Madalena securing the team victory with a pin over Todd Wickenden.




BMHS finishes third at Vaquero Invite


Battle Mountain was in Fernley this past weekend for the Vaquero Invitational and placed third as a team with 228 points. Fernley won its home tournament with 276.5 points and Churchill County was second at 233.5.


Jimenez at 106 pounds, Scherer (113) and James Spealman (132) won individual titles for the Longhorns. Jimenez won all four of his matches by pin, including the championship over Fernley’s Camron McMackin.


Scherer wrestled five times on the day and never saw a match go beyond the first period. 


He won his first two matches by pin and advanced to the semifinals after beating North Valleys’ Mario Escajeda by injury default. Scherer won the title in 79 seconds with a pin over Churchill County’s Andre Green.  


Spealman won four of his five matches by pin, with the other being a 7-1 win in the quarterfinals over Nikilos Reyes of North Valleys. After beating Douglas’ Victor Valdez in the semifinals, Spealman pinned Jaiden McFadden of Churchill County in the third period to win at 132 pounds.


Whitlock finished second at 165 pounds, going 3-1 on the day with three wins. Whitlock dropped his title bout 6-4 to Fernley’s Brandon McCullar.


Liam Bundrock (120), Wyatt Madalena (144), Asher Bundrock (157) were third and Ben George was fourth at 285 pounds.


Battle Mountain hosts Northern 2A duals on Friday at 1 p.m.
