Pershing County girls pick up three wins

It was a winning week for the PCHS girls hoop team.

The Lady Mustangs beat Coral Academy (50-18) and Silver Stage (50-9) on the road. This past Saturday, Pershing County hosted Yerington and won 40-24.

Pershing County improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the 2A Northern League.

"We didn't play our best game at Coral but we played hard and took care of business against an improved Coral team," said Coach Lee Houston.

Kaydance Happy led the scoring with 11 points. Raegan Burrows added 10. Taylor Garland and Anna Happy added eight and seven points respectively.

"Our goal at Silver Stage was to play a good, clean game at a place where we've struggled in the past. I think we achieved our goal as a team. Everyone played a ton and everyone scored, which is really cool," Houston added.

Happy led with 14 points. Aaliyah Allen had 10. Raegan Burrows and Yasmine McKinney added eight and five points each.

The Yerington game was the highlight of the week.  It was the second game in a row where every team member scored.

The varsity boys helped fill the student section. After the girls won, they cheered the boys to victory.

"It's always a big deal when Yerington comes to town. It's also a big deal when we beat them. This was a good team win as the girls that came off the bench played great. We were able to take care of business and get the big win," said Houston.

The squad has two seniors — Kaydance Happy and Kaylen Halverson. The juniors are Taylor Garland, Yasmine McKinney, Anna Happy and Mady Grenz. Raegan Burrows, Aaliyah Allen and Ayren Sam round out the team as sophomores.

On Friday, Jan. 20, the girls travel to West Wendover to play the Wolverines. Saturday, Jan. 21, they go to Battle Mountain to confront the Longhorns (3-0).

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, Pershing County hosts Coral Academy at 6 p.m. The Falcons will try to avenge their loss.
