The Lowry High School wrestling team made the short trip to Spring Creek this past weekend for the Kiwanis Invitational.
Jhett Harber led the way for the Buckaroos with a fourth-place finish at 157 pounds. Coda Nichols and Luke Fentress finished fifth at 113 pounds and 165, respectively and Damon Fetty placed sixth at 160 pounds.
Lowry finished eighth in the team standings with 121 points, 13.5 points behind Virgin Valley of the Southern 3A. Buhl, Idaho, won the tournament with 248.5 points, followed by Caldwell, Idaho (243) and Elko (199).
Harber advanced to the second round with a bye and reached the quarterfinals with a 71 second pin over Reed’s Cristan Katz. In the quarterfinals, Harber continued his winning ways a 7-5 decision over Weiser’s Willie Sudderth.
Harber lost in the semifinals to Ryder Sheen 12-1 of Buhl but came back in the consolation semifinals over Oakley Tennant of Buhl.
Harber took on Sudderth again in the third-place match with the Idaho wrestler winning 8-7. Harber led 7-3 in the third period, but Sudderth score the final five points to win.
Nichols won his first three matches by pin over Reno’s Nick McGee, Spring Creek’s Trent Whitely and Buhl’s Marshall Mortensen. Nichols dropped a 9-3 decision in the semifinals to Elko’s Marco Romero and then lost in the semifinal consolation to Casetin Gubler by a 10-5 decision. Nichols claimed fifth place with a 59-second pin over Caldwell’s Jackson Norman.
Fentress had to fight his way to a fifth-place finish at 165 pounds after losing a second-round match to Battle Mountain’s Stone Whitlock.
After a bye in the first consolation round, Fentress came back with three wins. He lost in the consolation semifinals but came back to pin Buhl’s Porter Higley for fifth.
Fetty started with a 10-7 win over Virgin Valley’s Dominic Piazza in the first round and followed with a 1-minute pin over Battle Mountain’s Andy Hall.
Fetty dropped his semifinal match, but bounced back for two consolation wins before losing his final two matches.
Kruz Gomez (106), Marcas Ricci (120), Brenton Baker (126), Chris Gildone (138), Billy DeLong (144), Brayden Dennis (175) and Logan Jonas (215) picked up wins for the Buckaroos.
Lowry travels to Idaho this weekend to compete at Skyview High School.
