Lady Bulldogs crush Braves, Railroaders

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team continued its dominant start to the Eastern 1A season with impressive wins over Owyhee and Carlin this past weekend.

The Lady Bulldogs beat the Braves 55-20 and Railroaders 64-11 to improve to 4-0 in league play and 14-3 overall.

McDermitt 55, Owyhee 20

The two rivals traded baskets early in the first quarter, with Owyhee leading 5-4.

However, the Lady Bulldogs ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, including a layup by Vina Tom at the buzzer following a steal on defense.

The rout was on from there, as McDermitt outscored Owyhee 15-2 in the second quarter.

Freshman Sadie Hinkey had an old-fashioned 3-point play and later added a 3-pointer from beyond the arc to close out an 18-0 run between the quarters, giving McDermitt a 22-5 lead.

Owyhee did not make its first field goal of the quarter, until there was 1:39 left to play.

Fellow freshman Reign Crutcher added six points in the second quarter to help McDermitt to a 28-7 lead at halftime. Crutcher finished with a game high 14 points.

The Lady Bulldogs caught fire from the 3-point line in the third quarter, as Vina Tom knocked down a pair of long distant shots as did Alexis Scott and Taylor Killsback. McDermitt scored the first nine points of the third quarter to build a 30-point lead at 37-7. Scott’s 3-pointer at the end of the period gave the Lady Bulldogs a running clock at 50-15.

Scott and Tom each added nine points, Hinkey had eight, Killsback six, Riata Palmer four, Kiarra Crutcher and Nicolette Northrup two each and Loni Tobey one.

McDermitt 64,

Carlin 11

Despite missing a handful of layups to start the game with Carlin, McDermitt had little trouble against the Railroaders on Saturday afternoon in McDermitt.

Tom opened the contest for the Lady Bulldogs with a 3-pointer and added two more buckets from behind the arc in the second quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs scored the final nine points of the first quarter and outscored the Railroaders 17-0 in the second quarter to finish the first half on  a 26-0 run and lead 31-2 at the break.

Tom made her fourth 3-pointer of the day in the third quarter and added 3-point play the old-fashioned way to help give McDermitt a running clock at 47-11.

Carlin scored nine points in the third quarter but did not score in the final 10 minutes of the contest, as McDermitt finished the game on a 23-0 run.

The battle for the top spot in the Eastern 1A is up for grabs on Friday, as McDermitt travels to Eureka for a 6 p.m. tip.
