The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team turned in a strong performance this past weekend at the Kiwanis Invitational at Spring Creek High School.
The Longhorns had three wrestlers finish in the top of four of their respective weight classes. Cruz Jimenez was second at 106 pounds, Sean Scherer placed third at 113 and Stone Whitlock finished fourth at 165 pounds.
As a team, Battle Mountain finished 11th, with 106.5 points, two points Damonte Ranch of the Northern 5A.
Buhl, Idaho, won the tournament with 248.5 points and Caldwell, Idaho, was second at 243.
Elko, the reigning 3A state champion, was third with 199 points and Weiser (197) and Moapa Valley (173) rounded out the top five.
After a first round bye, Jimenez raced into the semifinals with pins over Kruz Gomez of Lowry and Tyson Houston of Moapa Valley.
Jimenez reached the championship match with a dominating 17-0 win over Camron Mcmackin of Fernley, but lost a 5-1 decision in the final to Caldwell’s Ryan Hirchert.
Scherer collected three pins in his first three matches, beating Tonopah’s Montana Strozzi. Weiser’s Charlie Nevarez and Buhl’s Zan Parker.
Scherer lost in the semifinals to Fernley’s Nathan Pritchard, but came back with a 12-0 win over Caldwell’s Jackson Nomar and a pin of White Pine’s Casetin Gubler to place third.
Whitlock had to battle through the consolation bracket after a quarterfinal loss to Maddox Stevens of Weiser.
Whitlock bounced back with a 8-2 win over Elko’s Andres Flores in his first consolation match and pinned Gary Leavitt of Moapa Valley and Porter Higley of Buhl to get into the third-place bout. Whitlock dropped the match to Buhl’s Hector Miramontes.
Liam Bundrock picked up three wins at 120 pounds and reached the consolation fourth round for the Longhorns.
Scott Wall (175) also reached the consolation round with a pair of wins and Asher Bundrock won twice at 157 pounds.
Battle Mountain travels to Fernley this weekend for the Vaquero Invitational.
