There’s nothing like beating the defending state champions in the first league game of a new year.
The Lady Mustangs hosted Incline last Friday and beat them 59-15. To add to the excitement Taylor Garland sank a half-court shot on her first try during the boys halftime.
“A little boy asked me to make the shot and he won a prize,” she said.
This past Saturday, Pershing County traveled to North Tahoe and lost by two points (32-30).
On Tuesday, Lady Mustangs traveled to Reno to play Coral Academy. Results were not available at press time.
Pershing County now stands at 8-3 overall, and 1-1 in the 2A Northern League.
Raegan Burrows never let up against Incline’s point guards. The sophomore tallied 14 points, 13 steals and six rebounds. Meanwhile, Aaliyah Allen, Kaydance Happy, Kaylen Halverson and Mady Grenz dominated the paint.
They’re an exciting team to watch. The Lovelock girls had 22 steals, 28 offensive rebounds and 18 assists on 25 made shots.
By the end of the first quarter they racked up 20 points while holding their opponents to zero.
Kaydance Happy added 11 points. Allen scored eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists and a block. Halverson and Sam each contributed six points. Halverson had nine rebounds.
Anna Happy had six points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals.
The close loss against North Tahoe had to hurt. The Mustangs were down one player due to family obligations. Senior Kaydance Happy hurt her ankle in the fourth quarter, further depleting the team’s power.
Pershing County led by 18-11 at the half but the lead slipped through their fingers.
At the end of the fourth quarter Garland tried for a half-court shot like the one she made at home on Saturday.
Pershing County fans held their breath, crossed their fingers and watched the ball. Sadly, it rimmed out at the buzzer.
“We ended up having way too many turnovers to win a basketball game. We will work on taking care of the basketball and practice end game situations for close games,” said coach Lee Houston. “We look forward to North Tahoe coming to our place on Jan. 28.”
Raegan Burrows had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Kaydance Happy added 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Taylor Garland added seven steals and six assists.
On Friday, the girls travel to Silver Springs to play the Silver Stage Nighthawks. On Saturday, they host Yerington at 2 p.m.
