BMHS’ Jimenez, Scherer finish second at Buhl Invitational

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team was back in its home away from home, with its third trip to Idaho this season for the the49th annual Buhl Invitational.


The Longhorns placed 16th in the team standings with 62.5 points. South Fremont won the meet with 266.5 points and Buhl was second at 233. 


Snake River (160.5), Marsh Valley (143.5) and Ririe (115) rounded out the top five.


The Longhorns’ Cruz Jimenez at 106 pounds and Sean Scherer (113) each earned runner-up finishes.


Jimenez received to byes into the quarterfinals at 106 pounds and cruised to a second-period pin over Tayven Kunz of Ririe.


Jimenez advanced to the championship with a 6-3 win over Gabe Muilenburg of Glenns Ferry. Jimenez lost the championship match to Collin Morris of Marsh Valley.


After a first-round bye, Scherer pinned Kanyon Hohnstein of Challis and he beat Prabin Drajee of Canyon Ridge 17-0 to advance to the semifinals. 


He reached the finals with a pin over Elko’s Marco Romero, but lost to Hans Newby of Grace in the finale.


Liam Bundrock collected two wins at 120 pounds to advance to the consolation fifth round. James Spealman (126) and Asher Bundrock each picked up one win and reached the consolation fourth round.

at Canyon Ridge 


A second group of Battle Mountain wrestlers were in Twin Falls, Idaho, for the Canyon Ridge Invitational. Scott Wall placed fifth at 170 pounds. 


He lost his first match but came back with three wins in the consolation bracket. He pinned Rigin Dixon of Challis for fifth.


Anthony Lopez (132), Ari Kyllonen (138), Wyatt Madalena (145), Andy Wall (152) picked up wins and Kaylee Freeman competed in the girls tournament.


The Longhorns were 28th in the team standings with 35 points.


Canyon Ridge won its home tournament with 376.5 points and Ririe was second with 240.5 points.


Twin Falls (224), Elko (217) and Minico (171.5) rounded out the top five.


Battle Mountain travels to Spring Creek this weekend for the Kiwanis Invitational.
