Scherer, Jimenez provide strong showing at Sierra Nevada Classic

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team took three of its grapplers to Reno for the Sierra Nevada Classic that was held Dec. 28-29 at the Reno Event Center.


Sean Scherer continued to shine in the first month of the season, placing fifth.


After a first-round bye, the senior knocked off Bobby Cisneros from Central High School. 


Scherer reached the championship quarterfinals with a pin over Alex Otton of Tahoma. 


He won his quarterfinal match by a 7-5 decision over Luke Cheek of Harrisburg.


In the semifinals, Scherer lost to Elias Rivera from Folsom and then he dropped his consolation semifinal bout to Czar Quintanilla from University High School.


In the fifth-place match , Scherer pinned Isaac Scott of Thunder Ridge.    


Cruz Jimenez won his first two matches of the tournament at 106 pounds by pin over Parker Supenia of Mazama and Carson’s Jesse Olivia. 


Jimenez lost in the third round to Tobey Forman of Spanish Springs but he came in the consolation bracket to pin Alex Webber of Casa Roble in 83 seconds.


Jimenez lost his first match on Dec. 29 in the fourth round of the consolation bracket to Drew Dawson of Glide.


Asher Bundrock went 2-2 at 157 pounds for Battle Mountain. 


He won his opening match by pin against Caden McKnight of Churchill County but lost in the next round to Kelin Abbas of Culver. 


Bundrock kept his tournament going with a 7-6 overtime win against Landen Hecht from Harrisburg but Bundrock saw his tournament end in the consolation third round with a loss to Nathan Kolton of Los Banos.


Battle Mountain is back in Idaho for the Indian Invitational in Buhl and the JV squad will be at the Canyon Ridge tournament in Twin Falls.  


Delo Oro won the team title with 240 points, followed by Mountain Vierw (200), Rancho Bernardo (198) and Spanish Springs (179.5).
