Lady Bucks win streak ends at 31 with loss to Reno

The Lowry High School girls basketball team picked up another three wins last week at the Varsity Elite Tournament at McQueen High School in Reno, but also saw a streak come to an end.

The Lady Bucks collected wins over Portola, Calif., Galena and Reed, but ran into a buzzsaw on the final day of the tournament, as Reno ended Lowry’s 31-game win streak with a 67-40 win.

The last time the Lady Bucks lost was on Dec. 30, 2021, to Flagstaff, Ariz., in a tournament in Las Vegas

The 31-game win streak was for the eighth longest streak in Nevada history, tied with Centennial.

Reed holds the state record with 86 straight wins, followed by Reno (76) and Carson (61).

The Lady Bucks stand at 12-1 as they begin Northern 3A East play this week.

Lowry 62,

Portola 17

In the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 27, Lowry had little trouble with Portola.

The Lady Bucks led 32-11 at halftime and held Portola to six points in the second half.

Lowry 55,

Galena 23

Lowry took on another member of the Northern 5A on Wednesday, Dec. 28, and ran away from Galena in a 55-23 victory.

The Lady Bucks jumped out to a quick start with a 17-3 lead over the Grizzlies in the first quarter and did not look back.

Lowry began the second quarter on a 10-2 run, aided by a pair of technical foul free throws by Savannah Stoker and a pair of easy baskets by Britain Backus.

The advantage grew to 32-8 after a 3-pointer by Backus and Lowry led 36-9 at halftime.

Lowry led by as many as 30 points in the third quarter and held its largest advantage of the night at 49-15.

Lowry 56,

Reed 41

In its first game on Thursday, Dec. 29, Lowry had an early 9 a.m. contest with Reed of the Northern 5A.

The early start didn’t bother the Lady Bucks, who jumped out to a 16-6 lead after eight minutes of action.

The lead jumped to 30-12 after baskets by Mia Hernandez and Miranda Draper and free throw from Alexandra Barocio.

Lowry used a 17-10 run in the third quarter to build a 49-26 advantage and cruised in the fourth quarter to the 15-point win.

Reno 67,

Lowry 40

In one of the more anticipated games of the tournament, Reno was not going to allow another 3A school to win over a 5A squad.

The Huskies came out on fire, hitting five 3-point field goals in the first quarter to lead 26-14. Backus did her best to keep the Lady Bucks within striking distance with 10 points in the first quarter.

The Huskies began the second quarter with three free throws after a foul was called on a shot and Reno then made its next four field goals from behind the 3-point line to lead 41-16.

The Lady Bucks did score the final four points of the second quarter to trail 46-20 at halftime.

Lowry closed the gap to 48-25 in the third quarter, only to see Reno continue to hit shots from behind the arc.

For their play over the two days, Backus and Stoker were named to the all-tournament team.

Lowry begins Northern 3A East play on Thursday at home against Churchill County at 6 p.m.
