It was up to the Pershing County High School boys on Thursday night.
After the girls lost to Battle Mountain, they cheered the boys to a victory 62-42 over their rival school.
Pershing County wasted no time getting points on the board. Their defense kept the Longhorns at bay. At the half the score was 31-17.
“It was one of our best games for completeness in every aspect. A good redemption game,” coach Jesse Canchola said.
Marshall Happy led Lovelock’s attack with 19 points. Travis Donaldson and Aaron Kienbaum each scored 14.
On Friday night, the Mustangs lost their senior night game to West Wendover (22-70). They also honored the team’s only senior, Noel Zaldivar.
The boys now stand at 11-14 overall and 6-8 in the 2A North.
West Wendover and Incline are tied for first place (13-1), followed by North Tahoe (10-4), Battle Mountain (7-7) and Pershing County (6-8).
The Mustangs achieved their goal of making it to the regional championship. They’ll play Battle Mountain in the quarterfinals at Incline High School this Thursday at 3:30 p.m. It could be an exciting game. Pershing County went 1-1 against their rival school for the season.
“We are excited. We’ll see if we can get our first playoff win in a long time,” said Canchola.
Whoever wins the Pershing/Battle Mountain game advances to Friday’s league semifinals and will play West Wendover at 4:40 p.m.
Meanwhile, whoever wins the North Tahoe/Yerington game will play Incline in the semifinals at 8 p.m. On Saturday, a new regional champ will emerge. The championship game starts at 12:45 p.m.
